String Festival and HCSA History
In August 2010, a committee of Hillsdale residents met to discuss ways to support the musical development of Hillsdale County youth. After gaining the sponsorship of ArtWorks of Hillsdale, the committee submitted a grant proposal to the Hillsdale County Community Foundation (H.C.C.F.). The grant proposal requesting funding for a Summer String Festival was awarded in December 2010. The first String Festival was held in August 2011. In 2016, H.C.C.S.A. became an independent 501(c)3 organization and changed its name to Hillsdale County School of the Arts, Inc.
In addition to the Summer String Festival, HCSA strives to create opportunities for local youth to pursue year-round string instruction, increase access to professional string musicians and instruments, as well as enriching local school music programs. HCSA has annual winter and spring recitals with students of HCSA faculty, and is involved with the string program at Gier Elementary School for 3rd and 4th graders who are interested in learning a string instrument.
